Ultum Nature Systems has partnered with Marfied to bring you Ultum Nature Controsoil, an andisol-based substrate created from the volcanic ash of Mount Aso in Japan. Choosing the right substrate is a vital component for a successful planted aquarium, as it allows plants to flourish while buffering the water to optimum levels for certain freshwater livestock.

Proper aquarium substrate is paramount to successfully growing healthy aquatic plants. Controsoil absorbs impurities in the water column to provide a healthy environment for livestock. The texture and porosity of this soil provide the perfect medium for plant roots to latch onto. It is specifically designed for planted aquariums and shrimp keeping without excessive ammonia, which can lead to algae during initial use.

Ultum Nature Controsoil does not require any rinsing and won't cloud the water when properly used. For the best results, it is recommended to place the Controsoil into the aquarium prior to adding water, and to add water slowly without stirring up the soil. For planted tanks, UNS Controsoil can be used in conjunction with UNS Plant Food fertilizers.

To determine the amount of soil needed, the formula is: Length x Width x Desired Substrate Height (in inches), divided by 60, which will give the liters of soil required. Ultum Nature Controsoil is made in Japan and available in two colors: Black and Brown. It is also available in three granule sizes: Normal (5mm), Fine (3mm), and Extra Fine (1mm), and three bag sizes: 1L, 3L, and 10L.

The Controsoil is designed specifically for planted aquariums, as the granule composition and sizes provide optimal oxygen exchange and rich nutrients for aquatic plants. It is also optimal for fish and shrimp, being suitable for all freshwater inhabitants that prefer slightly acidic aquarium water. Additionally, the Controsoil has a low ammonia release, which promotes and accelerates beneficial bacteria growth, and it helps clarify and detoxify cloudy water by actively absorbing impurities. The soil also buffers the water to slightly acidic pH and lowers total water hardness, creating a better environment for aquatic plant nutrient consumption.
